EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's basketball play-by-play announcer and football broadcast host Will Tieman has been selected to receive the Ty Tyson Excellence In Sports Broadcasting Award as presented by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA). The award will be presented Monday night following the DSBA Charity Golf Outing at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township, Mich.
"I am humbled to receive this award," said Tieman. "When your name is being added to a list of recipients such as Ernie Harwell, who is the gold standard in our world, and fellow Spartan broadcaster and Hall of Famer George Blaha, it is truly an honor."
Tieman has spent the last 10 seasons as the play-by-play voice of the Michigan State men's basketball team, having also served in the same capacity from 1992-96. The 2012 football season will be Tieman's 15th as part of the Spartan football broadcast team, where he currently serves as broadcast host. He began his play-by-play career in 1970 as voice of Miami (Ohio) University. His career has spanned radio and television, including the Big Ten Conference Basketball "Game of the Week," Big Ten football and national radio broadcasts of the Citrus Bowl, Motor City Bowl, International Bowl and Blue-Gray All-Star Classic. Tieman has received three "Best Network Play-by-Play" awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, and served as president of the DSBA for two years.
The award is named after Ty Tyson, who was instrumental in the founding of the DSBA in 1948, while also serving as its first president. Among his many pursuits, Tyson was the radio play-by-play voice for the Detroit Tigers from 1927-42. He returned to the airways in 1947 for play-by-play for the first Detroit Tiger telecast. He was inducted in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
