Women's Soccer Falls to Michigan, 2-1

EAST LANSING - The comeback fell short for the Michigan State women's soccer team on Thursday, as the Spartan fell to No. 21 Michigan, 2-1 at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans drop to 7-3-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverine improve to 8-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.
"After the first TV timeout, we started to play," said head coach Tom Saxton. "We were knocked back on our heels by their early goals and a lot of people kind of put their heads down. We had to snap them out of it attitude-wise. They fought like heck the rest of the way."
Michigan opened with two quick goals in the first 14 minutes, but the MSU defense withheld the Wolverine attack the rest of the way, allowing the Spartan offense a chance to comeback.
The Spartans got on the board in the 78th minute on a header from Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz off a Kristen Evans free kick, and had multiple opportunities down the stretch to equalize it. However, a couple close attempts went wide, resulting in the 2-1 final.
It was Fiebernitz' team-best fifth goal of the season.
The Wolverines' goals came in the 10th minute on a 25-yard kick from Christina Murillo, assisted by Shelina Zadorsky, and a rebound shot from Meghan Toohey in the 15th minute, off the original shot from Holly Hein.
Michigan outshot MSU 20-9 on the day. This brings the Spartans to a record of 0-1-1 against ranked opponents.
"Michigan is very good team," said Saxton. "You can't dig yourself a hole like that."
The Spartans return Sunday, October 6, when they play at Iowa at 2 p.m.
