EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Athletic Department, with the volunteer efforts of over 225 Spartan student-athletes, held its inaugural Student-Athlete Thank-a-Thon from Feb. 19-21 at Spartan Stadium. The student-athletes volunteered their time to make personal thank you calls or write thank you letters to Spartan Fund members who generously give to MSU Athletics.
Highlights of the Inaugural Thank-A-Thon
"I really enjoyed the opportunity to speak with the Spartan Fund members who generously give not only to my sport, but to other areas of athletics," said women's golf All-American Caroline Powers. "It gives us a chance to say `thanks' to those who make such a huge impact on our daily experience here at MSU."
"Without a scholarship, I wouldn't have been able to attend to MSU," said football sophomore Keith Mumphery. "It's really important to me to thank those that have provided me that opportunity. Without it, I wouldn't have had the chance to earn a Michigan State University degree or make the life-long friendships I know I'll always have. I'm lucky that I'll always be able to call myself a Spartan because of the support I received."
"I cannot say enough about our generous Spartan Fund members and how their contributions continue to provide our athletics department the opportunity to support 25 varsity sports," said MSU Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development Chuck Sleeper: "I am especially proud of our volunteer student-athletes for embracing this effort and for the valued sponsorship by Verizon Wireless which allowed our student-athletes the mechanism to connect. It speaks volumes that our student-athletes recognize the efforts of our Spartan Fund members and have a little fun while making connections with our supporters."
MSU Athletics thanks the sponsors of the inaugural Student-Athlete Thank-a-Thon, including Verizon Wireless, who donated the use of more than 50 phones, and Spartan Hall of Fame Café, the Red Cedar Café, and Tropical Smoothie East Lansing, who all provided meals to student-athletes.
The MSU Athletic Department is a self-sustaining department of Michigan State University that relies heavily on philanthropic support - approximately 20% of its budget - to meet annual funding needs. Contributions to MSU Athletics through the Spartan Fund are used to fund scholarships, facility projects, and annual operational costs, such as equipment, travel, etc.
