Blaise Salter Named Big Ten Player of the Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore catcher and designated hitter Blaise Salter has been named Big Ten Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Salter hit .667 (8-for-12) over the weekend sweep at Santa Clara with one double, a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored.
It marks the first MSU player of the week since Jeff Holm was named co-player of the week on May 9, 2011.
The sweep pushed MSU to 9-7 on the season and the Spartans open their home season this weekend against Oakland (March 22-24).
In Friday's 6-1 game one victory, Salter went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored while playing catcher. Salter tied a career high in both hits (4) and RBIs (3), in a 7-5 win in game two, including a homer and a double.
In the series finale, Salter went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs as the designated hitter. For the weekend, Salter had a slugging percentage of 1.000 and an on-base percentage of .667.
Salter now leads the Spartans in batting with a .358 mark.
The sweep pushed MSU to 9-7 on the season and the Spartans open their home season this weekend against Oakland (March 22-24). The first game is scheduled for Friday at 3:05 p.m.
