East Lansing, Michigan - - Michigan State's novice rowing program got its first experience with collegiate competition last weekend, hosting Michigan on the Grand River on Sunday, Oct. 26. The first taste of college racing was a sweet one for the Spartan novices, as both boats had a strong day against the Wolverines.
MSU and Michigan each had a pair of novice eights, and all fourboats competed head-to-head in a series of pieces. MSU's first novice eight won all five pieces outright for a dominating day; the second Spartan novice entry finished ahead of both Wolverine entries on four of the five pieces, finishing behind Michigan's first novice in the third piece.
MSU's varsity rowers cheered on their teammates from the barge, creating a "student section" of support as the novices had their first opportunity to race in the Green & White.
"The novices are learning what it takes to be competitive at the Division I level, while learning the terminology, technique, and nuances of a sport that is new to them," said head coach Katie Bitz. " It is always good to have little successes to keep them engaged in what can be an overwhelming experience in the beginning. We have a long way to go, but we are moving in the right direction."
The Spartan varsity has one more event in the fall training season, a Nov. 8 event in Columbus with host Ohio State, Indiana, and Notre Dame.
