EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartans landed two newcomers that will be joining the Michigan State women's tennis team for the 2015-16 season. Joining the Spartans in the fall will be the two four-star recruits of Emily Metcalf from Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Davina Nguyen of Shelby Township, Michigan.
"We are really excited for Davina and Emily joining our team and family next year," said head coach Simone Jardim. "They are not only great players but also amazing young ladies."
Metcalf, a senior at Valley View High School, is coached by Jason Manchester and is a four-time singles champion. She was a member of the state championship teams in 2011 and 2013. In 2012, she won the singles 16 champion at the Fall Southern Closed Indoor Championships and took second at the Bullfrog South Level 2 tournament. In 2014, she was named the Wendy's High School tennis player of the year and the All-Arkansas preps outstanding tennis player of the year. She boasts a 3.9 GPA at Valley View where she is an honor grad and president of the spirit club. She is the daughter of Gene and Kim Metcalf.
"I really just fell in love with the entire school," said Metcalf. "It was a great fit academically and I loved the team and the coaches. At the Jacksonville State game I looked up and the first thing I saw was the 15,000 students going crazy wearing the exact same thing and I knew that was exactly the type of student body I wanted to be a part of."
Nguyen is a senior at Utica High School where she claimed the division I No. 1 singles championship in 2012 and 2014, under head coach Christine Dabrowski. In 2012 she was the national champion at the United States Tennis Association 16s National. Nguyen is also an honor roll student at Utica High School. She is the daughter of Tam Pham and Tom McCulloch.
"I chose to come to MSU because the coaches are great and the atmosphere of the team made me feel like family," said Nguyen. "The coaches were very personable; they made me feel like I was a part of the team."
