
Gary Harris Named a Wooden Award Finalist

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State basketball sophomore guard Gary Harris has been named to the John R. Wooden Player of the Year Award ballot, as announced on Saturday, March 8, by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. He is one of 15 student-athletes selected for the ballot by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board.
The Fishers, Ind., native has scored 20 points or more a team-best 10 times this season. He is the second highest scorer in the Big Ten, averaging 17.7 ppg and sits third in steals with 2.0 spg. In Big Ten games, Harris ranks fourth in scoring (17.5 ppg) and second in steals (2.4 spg). The 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year is also on the Oscar Robertson Trophy and Naismith Award Midseason Watch Lists.
Harris is one of three players on the ballot that were not on the Midseason Top 25, including Michigan's Nik Stauskas, the only other Big Ten finalist. All balloted players have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduation and are maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year presented by Wendy's will be announced on ESPN during the Final Four Weekend in Dallas, Texas.
The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation's top 10 players, will be announced the week of the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament after voting by almost 1,000 media members between March 12 and 24 and through the fan voting site sponsored by Wendy's.
