The Spartan Invitational will be the only tournament in East Lansing this fall, as MSU will later travel to Northwestern, Akron, ITA Midwest Regionals and ITA Indoor Nationals. Michigan State is coming off a 2013-14 season in which it compiled a 17-9 record, but had a first-round exit in the Big Ten Tournament. That marked the most wins in a season for the program since the 1990-91 season.
The Spartans return three seniors, including Catherine Parenteau, who recorded a 12-9 record in singles play last season. The team also added four freshmen to the roster.
Sophomore Erin Faulkner and junior Emily Meyers have been named captains by the team and seventh-year head coach Simone Jardim. Eleven Spartans will see action on the court this weekend.
Sophomore Erin Faulkner will be competing at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles will be sophomore Athena Trouillot and at No. 3 singles senior Catherine Parenteau will be competing. A trio of freshmen will compete at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles with Aslina Chau, Allie Baer, and Lexi Baylis, respectively. Rounding out singles play is junior Emily Meyers.
Faulkner will be paired with freshman Allie Baer in No. 1 doubles. Meyers will team up with freshman Chau to compete in No. 2 doubles. Senior Catherine Parenteau will be featured at No. 3 doubles with Trouillot. At No. 4 doubles, sophomore Anna Zelechonok with play with Baylis.
The Spartan Invitational will be the first time Jardim's 2014-15 stacks up against competition. With quality returning players and added new talent on the team, she notes she is just excited to finally get out and play.
"When you play someone from another school you are able to let go a little bit, a little feistier, be more competitive, so that's exciting" Jardim said. "The fall is an important piece to having a successful year. I like last fall semester we had a much, much better fall than we had in past years. I think having a great fall builds confidence, it gets other people's attention and all of a sudden when they play you in the spring they look at you different."
