Sept. 25, 2014 EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team travels to Northwestern this weekend to compete in the Wildcat Invitational. The tournament will take place from Friday, Sept. 26 to Sunday, Sept. 28. The action is scheduled to start at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center at 10 a.m. ET Friday, and admission is free.
Joining the Spartans in Evanston will be DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Illinois-Chicago, Kentucky, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and Western Michigan. DePaul, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Northwestern all competed in the NCAA Tournament last season.
MSU looks to continue its winning ways in the 2014-15 campaign. The Spartans started off hot two weekends ago at the MSU Spartan Invitational, coming away winners in 25 matches. MSU had undefeated performances in singles play by Lexi Baylis, Aslina Chua, Erin Faulkner, Hilary Hager, Catherine Parenteau, and Athena Trouillot. At doubles play the teams of Allie Baer and Faulker, Baylis and Trouillot, and Hager and Anna Zelechonok all finished the Spartan Invitational undefeated.
"The Northwestern Invite is always a good tournament because of the quality of the teams," said head coach Simone Jardim. "It's exciting to have that kind of competition, especially for the new kids. I think that will be good."
Faulkner will represent the Spartans in the Draw A singles at the Wildcat Invitational against Olivia Myers of Western Michigan. The Spartans will also face a pair of Panthers from Florida International in the Draw A singles, as Trouillot will take on Nina Nagode and Chua will take on Yana Koroleva. Koroleva is ranked No. 24 in the ITA preseason poll. Rounding up Draw A singles, Baylis will take on Kentucky's Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff.
Five Spartans will be competing in the Draw B singles bracket. Hager will take on Erin Larner of Northwestern, sophomore Emmy Virkus will compete against Keti Mebuke of UIC, and junior Emily Meyers will face Nerma Caluk of Florida International. A duo of Spartan freshmen will also compete in Draw B as Allie Baer takes on Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna of Eastern Michigan and Colleen O'Brien take on Northwestern's Rheeya Doshi.
The sophomore duo of Faulkner and Trouillot will represent the Green and White in Draw A doubles taking on Aleck and Myers from Western Michigan. Baer and Parenteau will also compete in the Draw A doubles bracket as they start off against Chumney and Brigante of Oklahoma.
Three doubles teams will compete for MSU in the Draw B doubles bracket. Chua and Hager will face Oklahoma's Devine and Melrose, Colleen O'Brien and Emmy Virkus will take on Brozovich and Briceno of Florida International, and Baylis and Meyers will be taking on a mixed team in the first round of competition.
