Men's Golf in Ninth Place at Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. - The Michigan State men's golf team is tied for ninth place at the Gopher Invitational after shooting a 602 (300-302) in the first two rounds of the tournament on Sunday. The 14-team event, which is being held at the par 71, 7,152-yard Windsong Golf Club, features seven schools that qualified for the NCAA Regionals last season.
Gareth Lappin leads the Spartans through 36 holes with a 7-over-par 149. The sophomore from Belfast, Northern Ireland, carded a 1-over 72 in the first round and followed with a 77 in the afternoon. He is tied for 25th place on the individual leaderboard.
Charlie Netzel and Sam Weatherhead both compiled totals of 152 (+10) and are tied for 35th. Netzel produced back-to-back rounds of 76, while Weatherhead shot a 75 and then a 77.
Mitch Rutledge is tied for 40th at 11-over (77-76-153), and Jon Finley is tied for 46th at 13-over 155. Finley bounced back from a first-round 82 to lead the Spartans in the second round with a 73.
The third and final round of the Gopher Invitational is set for Monday, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. EDT for Michigan State. Live scoring is available at BirdieFire.com.
