Michigan State senior guard Travis Trice was named Big Ten Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday. In a pair of Spartan victories, he averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds on the road at Iowa and at home against Northwestern. He shot 52.0 percent from the field and 70.0 percent from 3-point range, while posting a 7-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. (The Big Ten office classified last Monday's game vs. Indiana as part of the previous week, and awarded Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, Jan. 6.) It is the second weekly honor of Trice's career, as he was honored by the Big Ten in the first week of the season (Nov. 17).
Trice opened the week by scoring a game-high 25 points at Iowa. He connected on 7-of-8 (.875) from 3-point range, matching the MSU single-game record for 3-point field-goal percentage. Trice dished out four assists as he notched his third 25-point game of the season.
In an overtime victory against Northwestern, Trice recorded his first-career double-double with a team-high 18 points and 10 assists, while committing just one turnover. He also recorded three steals, while making 8-of-10 shots from the foul line.
On the season, Trice leads the Big Ten in overall assist-to-turnover ratio (4.0) and assists per game (6.1 apg). Through four games, Trice leads the conference in assists (6.8 apg), assist-to-turnover ratio (9.0), and 3-point field goals made (2.8), while ranking tied for first in steals (2.3 spg) and tied for second in scoring (18.8 ppg).
