Women's Swimming & Diving Travels to Bowling Green

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team will compete in a non-conference tri meet at Bowling Green on Friday. The competition will take place at Cooper Pool against the Thundering Herd of Marshall and the Falcons of Bowling Green.
"Both teams this Friday are really well coached," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "They both have really nice teams and they are very solid in all of their events. It will be a challenge for our team for sure." Fans can follow live results on the Meet Mobile app and live updates on Twitter.
LAST TIME OUT
The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team fell to the No. 19 Purdue Boilermakers, 193-248. The Spartans fell to 3-5 overall, and 0-2 against Big Ten opponents.
Senior Shelby Lacy started the Friday session by taking third in the women's 100 IM with a time of 1:00.00. Sophomore Kennedy Cutler finished immediately after at 1:00.01. Lacy also finished third in the 50 breast, with a time of 29.90.
Freshman Madison Nowak record the fastest time for MSU in the women's 50 back. Nowak finished with a time of 27.48.
In the women's 50 butterfly, sophomore Sarah Love finished in second with a 25.88 time.
LAST YEAR
Last year, the Michigan State women's swimming and diving team fell in a meet that came down to the last event against the Falcons. The Spartans dropped a 144-150 decision.
Elizabeth Brown led the Spartans in the 200 butterfly with a victorious time of 2:05.59. Picking up third-place points was Hannah Pugh with a time of 2:09.21. Brown later earned a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley, clocking a time of 2:09.75.
Michigan State picked up another individual win as Marina Borri took first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.20. Lacy finished third overall with a time of 2:24.30.
The Spartans dominated the boards, taking first through third on both the 1-meter and 3-meter. Alison Menzies paced MSU on the 1-meter for her win with a score of 277.20, followed by Cristee Cordes in second (262.30) and Madeline Sewell in third (257.75). Cordes earned a win on the 3-meter board with a score of 284.60. Sewell came in second place with a score of 281.10, while Menzies rounded out the group with a score of 249.40 for third.
FOCUSING ON THE FALCONS
The Bowling Green Falcons boast a 3-0 record on the season. BGSU has tallied victories over Ball State, Oakland, and Eastern Michigan. The Falcons are led by junior Daniela Carrillo and freshman Estela Davis. Carrillo won the 100 breaststroke at the Mexican Short Course National Championships in December and earned a NCAA B cut qualifying time in the 200 breaststroke. Davis also posted a NCAA B cut qualifying time in the 200 backstroke and won the 50 backstroke at the Mexican Short Course National Championships.
MONITORING MARSHALL
Marshall comes into this weekend with a 4-3 record, including wins over UNC Asheville, Xavier, Wright State, and Ohio. The Thundering Herd finished in ninth place at the 2014 Conference USA Championships. Sophomore Danica Ross will be a swimmer to watch for Marshall, as she was victorious in both the 50 and 100 free against Ohio.
FEELING FRESH
The Spartan freshmen have accounted for nearly half of the swimming victories this season. The freshmen have contributed in 34 of the 75 swimming event victories on the season so far.
