Spartans End Trip in N.C. With a Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Michigan State split its double-header on Sunday, defeating North Carolina A&T, 7-0, after losing a tough match to North Carolina State in the afternoon, 4-1, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
"It was a good way to complete the weekend," head coach Gene Orlando said. "It was great to finish with a win."
Senior Harry Jadun had a great day against the No. 28 Wolfpack, defeating No. 39 Nick Horton, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 3 singles spot. Jadun also teamed with junior John Patrick Mullane, and the duo, ranked No. 56, took out N.C. State's No. 19 pairing of Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge, at the No. 1 position, 6-3.
On the No. 2 court, sophomore Mac Roy and freshman Michael Dube fell to Simon Norenius and Austin Powell, 6-2.
The doubles point came down the No. 3 position, with the team of Horton and Thomas Weigel narrowly defeating senior Gijs Linders and sophomore Brett Forman, 7-5.
Mullane has been bothered by a shoulder injury, and did not participate in singles play.
"Everyone stepped up in (Mullane's) absence," Orlando said. "We competed well, we just couldn't close."
Linders, ranked No. 76 in singles, took over at the No. 1 singles spot for Mullane. No. 51 Powell defeated Linders, 6-4, 6-2.
In No. 2 singles, Forman battled No. 123 Robbie Mudge into three sets, but ultimately came up short, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Freshman Jasper Koenen represented Michigan State in No. 4 singles, falling to Norenius, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Dube and Roy, competing against Beck Bond and Weigel, respectively, did not finish their matches.
The No. 63 Spartans will be on the road again next weekend in Athens, Ga., starting with No. 8 Georgia on Friday.
