Women's Swimming & Diving Falls to Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Michigan State women's swimming & team fell to the Illinois Fighting Illini, 190-110 in Champaign on Saturday. The Spartans now hold a record of 5-8 this the season. The Green and White picked up four victories on the afternoon.
"Our diving was great today," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We probably were a little tired today, and we should rest a bit. But give credit to Illinois, they swam great today, and they are a very good team."
The Spartan divers owned the boards again on Saturday afternoon. MSU swept the top three scores in both events. Senior Cristee Cordes broke her career record in the 3-meter event with a score of 336.90. Senior Alison Menzies followed behind in second at 293.7, while sophomore Madeline Sewell finished in third at 272.03. Cordes earned her second victory of the day in the 1-meter diving, scoring 294.37. Sewell finished second at 277.20, and Menzies was third at 271.13.
In the 200 butterfly, junior Elizabeth Brown finished first with a time of 2:03.16. Senior Hannah Pugh recorded a second-place finish at 2:03.85.
Junior Marina Borri recorded the Spartans final victory of the afternoon in the 200 breaststroke. Borri clocked in at 2:21.99. Pugh finished in second at 2:22.45 in the 200 breaststroke and second in the 400 IM at 4:28.62.
Senior Becca Berman finished second at the 1000 freestyle at 10:21.42. Freshman Madison Nowak also finished second in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 58.36.
The Spartans conclude their dual season on Friday, Feb. 6 as they host No. 15 Michigan. The match will begin at 6 p.m., Friday will mark the final time that the senior class of 2015 will compete at McCaffree Pool. Senior Night festivities will take place before the meet.
