NOTRE DAME, Ind. -
The dynamic duo of junior Mac Roy and sophomore Michael Dube, who came into the doubles tournament ranked third, were the lone Spartan survivors in the second day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regionals.
Michigan State head coach Gene Orlando said that his team of two was able to weather the storm to advance to the next round.
"It's always tough to get through the first round being a high seed and playing a dangerous team," Orlando said. "They pushed us to the limit, but we were able to weather the storm and get the job done."
Roy and Dube will play in-state rival Michigan's team of Crocker/Cuba tomorrow and another match after that should they advance.
Orlando said that the pair needs to "just keep on" in order to achieve success.
"Getting their double game sharper and finding that edge," he said. "You have to be tested early. I think that could build well for us. We need to be more focused and ready. This was our test, and obviously we'll be ready for tomorrow."
In regards to how the team faired in singles play with a series of tough losses, Orlando said that he is glad of the improvements shown despite the outcome.
"We're playing to win," Orlando said. "Obviously, we're playing to get better and be ready for the spring season, but we've been working on a lot of things. I can see the improvement with each player. [Losing] is disappointing. We came to win, but we are playing the best players in the Midwest. We were close, but we weren't able to finish."
