EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Madeline Sewell and freshman Julia Oppedisano, a pair of Michigan State divers, were awarded weekly honors by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday after strong showings on Friday, Oct. 23, against Illinois.
Sewell's sweep of the boards in NCAA-qualifying fashion garnered her Big Ten Diver of the Week. She took first on the 1-meter dive with a score of 299.10 and followed up with top honors on the 3-meter, posting a tally of 325.05.
Oppedisano was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week for her second-place effort on the 1-meter board. Her 276.60 was only bested by Sewell and was an NCAA qualifying mark. Oppedisano took fifth in the 3 meter with a score of 209.62.
"It is fantastic for them (Madeline and Julia) and also for (coach) Eric (Best)," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "He is one of the best diving coaches in the conference. Madeline is a great kid and a hard worker, and Julia is a typical Michigan State diver. They work extremely hard and perform well. I am happy for both of them. They score a lot of points for us."
The Spartans next will be in the pool on Friday, Oct. 30, when they square off against Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, at 5 p.m.
