EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimming & diving returns to the pool on Friday, Oct. 30, at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Events from the Rolfs Aquatic Center begin at 5 p.m.
"They have worked really hard, and we are at a point now that we are pushing for the Northwestern Invite," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "The biggest thing is getting back to competition and trying to do the best you can. This week we will be moving some people around, and I am looking forward to competing against my old buddy from St. Bonaventure, Mike Litzinger."
The Spartan women are coming off a conference dual against Illinois last Friday. Divers junior Madeline Sewell and freshman Julia Oppedisano earned weekly Big Ten honors after posting NCAA qualifying marks on the 1-meter board. Sewell swept the diving events as she won the 3-meter competition with a score of 325.05.
In the sprints, it has been the underclassmen stepping up early in the season. Sophomore Rachel Bukowski holds MSU's top time in the 50 free with a 23.73, while freshman Courtney Aycock has recorded a 52.26 in the 100 free and 1:53.34 in the 200 free.
The men's team was idle last week after falling at Iowa on Oct. 16. Junior Alec Kandt currently holds the top times in three different events. Kandt paces the Spartans in the 100 IM with a time of 52.61, the 100 breast with a 57.06 and his 2:08.71 in the 200 breast is nearly four seconds ahead of any other MSU swimmer.
Sophomore Joe Szczupakiewicz has been a staple of the men's distance corps, turning in efforts of 4:40.83 and 9:32.60 in the 500 free and 1,000 free, respectively.
"We have a couple of meets before Northwestern, including a meet at Toledo, which will be huge for the women," Gianiodis said. "We are getting into that two-week period where things are getting serious, and we are sharpening up some things training wise."
Results will be available following the conclusion of the meet on MSUspartans.com.
