EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimming & diving returns to the Charles McCaffree Pool in East Lansing on Friday, Nov. 12, to host Cincinnati and Bowling Green. Action begins at 5 p.m.
"We have been swimming really well," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "This will be a little bit of a larger meet, so there will be longer breaks between events. I thought we swam great despite many of our student-athletes having some tough doubles. I have been really happy, though. The kids are doing great, and it has been difficult to determine the standout. Everyone has had good performances."
Last time out, the women's team notched its second victory of the season at Toledo. Junior Madeline Sewell, the Big Ten Diver of the Week on Oct. 28, continued her strong 2015 season with a season-best 301.5 in the 1-meter dive to take first at Toledo. Sewell started her meet with a first-place performance on the 3-meter board with a score of 290.5, beating teammate Julia Oppedisano, who second by 43.8 points. Sewell has already posted NCAA qualifying marks at both heights.
Sophomore Madison Nowak opened the meet at Toledo for Michigan State with a 57.16 first leg of the 400 medley. The Spartans led the event from start to finish. Nowak continued her meet in the 100 back, taking first out of the eight-person field with a time of 56.92, clearing second place by just less than two seconds. Nowak's day ended in the 200 back, once again taking first by nearly two seconds with a time of 2:05.87.
"The men are looking better, and we are exclusively training short course now," Gianiodis said. "They have to return to being competitive and learn how to race. We have things we want to accomplish next week at Northwestern. We have been able to sit back to train and think, although I do wish we had a couple of more races for the guys."
The men's swimming & diving corps has enjoyed a bye week to train after falling to Notre Dame in South Bend on Oct. 30. Sophomore Joe Szczupakewicz paced the Spartans in both the 500 and 1,000-yard free swims. Szczupakewicz's 4:38.23 was the fastest 500 turned in this season by any Spartan. He also leads the team in the 1,000 yard, posting a 9:32.60 last time out at Iowa.
Junior Alec Kandt posted a late first-place effort for MSU in the 200 breaststroke against the Fighting Irish. Kandt beat out the field with a time of 2:06.36.
Friday's contest between MSU and Cincinnati will feature both the men and women, while the Spartans' matchup against BGSU will be battled by only the women.
Live results will be available for the meet on the meet mobile app on both Android and Apple products. Results will be available on MSUSpartans.com following the conclusion of the meet.
