Spartan Swimming & Diving Welcomes New Class

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimming & diving welcomed a class of eight swimmers on Wednesday, announced head coach Matt Gianiodis. The 2016 recruiting corps features three women and five men that will don the Green and White next fall.
"It is a great class of kids," said Gianiodis. "One thing that is consistent across the board with this class is that not only are they going to help us in the pool, but they are really good students. Three of the seven will be in the honors college. Our staff has done a good job of getting recruits that will be successful here both athletically and academically. It is a really talented and athletic group. They will help us get better, and come in with the goal to break a lot of records. They have the ability to come in and do that."

Coronel was a finalist in the 100 back at the 2014-15 Ohio State Championships, finishing in seventh. She had a pair of top-10 performances in qualifying heats at the 2015 NCSA Junior National Championships over the summer, taking eighth in the 100 back and sixth in the 100 free. Collegeswimming.com has Coronel ranked 23rd in Ohio.

Keshemberg joins MSU as a three-time finalist at the 2014-15 Wisconsin Girls Division II State Championships, competing in both the back and free. She was a finalist at the 2013 Speedo Champions series in Minneapolis, taking eighth in the 200 back. Keshemberg notched a pair of top-five finishes in qualifying heats at the 2015 Wisconsin Senior State Championships over the summer, taking fifth in the 200 back and second in the 200 fly. "Natalie is a good long course swimmer in the fly and backstroke. She enjoyed her visit and will major in hospitality and business, so she really did her homework on the school before committing.

Mullins was a finalist at the 2013-14 Arizona State Championships, taking second in the 100 free with a time of 51.53. More recently, she took 11th in the 100 backstroke at the 2015 Arizona Long Course Open, while placing top 25 in the 100 free. Mullins is ranked No. 6 in her class in the state of Arizona by collegeswimming.com.

"Being from Arizona, getting Madison in here expands our recruiting footprint quite a bit. She is a really nice kid and had a great visit to campus. We are looking for some really great things out of her."

Meffert comes to East Lansing with racing experience in several large meets. He participated at the 2015 NASA Jr. National Championship Cup and the 2015 Futures Championships. Meffert is ranked 25th in the state of Virginia according to collegeswimming.com.

"Phillip is going to give us a lot of depth in the breaststroke and IM events. He is from Virginia, which is a bit outside of our recruiting footprint, but he enjoyed his trip here and enjoyed Michigan State. We are excited to have him."

Collegeswimming.com has tabbed Mork the No. 8 recruit in Michigan after he won two state titles a year ago in the 50 and 100 free. He was a two-time finalist as a sophomore at the Michigan State Championships, taking second in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free. Mork competed at the 2015 Futures Championships over the summer in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly.

"Nehemiah is from Midland, which we get a lot of student-athletes from there. We are really excited to have him. He was a state champion and will be really good."

Piper currently is ranked seventh in the state of Illinois according to collegeswimming.com. He was a finalist in the 200 IM at the 2014-15 Illinois State Championships, finishing fourth. Piper also was a two-time finalist as a sophomore at states, taking sixth and seventh in the 100 back and 200 IM, respectively. He swam four different strokes (back, free, fly and IM) at the 2015 NCSA Junior Nationals over the simmer.
Coach Gianiodis on Piper:
"Scott is a premiere recruit and one of the better recruits we have had come through the doors here in a really long time. He is from Naperville, Illinois, so he will join the many we have from Naperville on the team. We are very excited to have him coming.

Woods enters his senior season the 21st ranked recruit out of the state of Illinois. He was a finalist in the 2014-15 Illinois State Championships in the 50 free, placing fifth. Woods has competed in several top meets, including the 2015 Futures Championships, the 2015 Illinois Open and the 2014 NCSA Junior Nationals.

"He is a good sprinter and really had a good trip here. I enjoyed meeting his family, and he is a really good kid. He was born and raised in Big Ten country, and I think he really is going to do good things here."
