INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Spartans split their Saturday doubleheader road trip against No. 43 Louisville and IUPUI. No. 60 Michigan State fell to Louisville on the road, 4-0, and defeated IUPUI, 6-0.
"Our main mission was to beat Louisville," head coach Gene Orlando said. "We put ourselves in position to win, but we just came out slow."
In a match that was much closer than the score indicated, MSU fell behind early to the Cardinals in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals won the doubles point, but the Spartans rallied and came up just short.
"Our guys battled and bounced back," Orlando said. "Ultimately, it was just too much to overcome."
John Patrick Mullane was in the lineup for the first time since playing at NC State on Jan. 18. He played in the No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles with Harry Jadun. Both of his matches were unfinished.
Mac Roy and Michael Dube moved to the No. 3 doubles spot, and Brett Forman, Jadun, Roy, and Dube all slid down one singles position.
Mullane, Forman, Roy and Dube all battled back to force their matches to a third set after losing the first.
Michigan State then traveled to Indianapolis to take on the IUPUI Jaguars at the West Indy Racquet Club. Jadun and Mullane sat the dual match out, bumping Roy and Dube back to the No. 2 doubles, while Jasper Koenen and Doug Zade took over the No. 3 position.
The Spartans talked about coming out and landing the first punch against the Jaguars after the loss to Louisville; and that's exactly what they did.
"We didn't show enough energy to start off in the warm ups (against Louisville)," Roy said. "But we brought the fight to IUPUI; we handled them like we were supposed to."
Michigan State won the doubles point, and proceeded to win every singles match, except for Forman at No. 2 singles, whose match remained unfinished after Gijs Linders clinched the fourth point.
"We have so many opportunities and tough matches ahead," Orlando said. "We can't focus on the past, we've got to move forward; and we will."
The Spartans move to 7-4 on the season.
Extra Notes
Doug Zade and Jasper Koenen remain undefeated, at 5-0, in doubles play on the season.
Each one of the last seven dual matches the Spartans have played have been shutouts, including six wins.
Michigan State is 6-1 when it wins the doubles point. The only loss came to then-No. 8 Georgia.
