Rowers Kick Off 2015 in Oak Ridge

East Lansing, Mich - Michigan State kicks off the 2015 season this weekend in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, taking part in the 12-team Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Louisville. The weekend will put a punctuation mark on MSU's spring break trip, as the squad has been training in Fort Gaines, Georgia for the last week.

The Spartans will be lining up with several competitive crews, as the field includes four team's in the preseason top-20 and three others which are receiving votes. The field of crews features 2014 NCAA qualifiers No. 2 Virginia, No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 18 Louisville, and Oklahoma (RV) in addition to Alabama, Kansas, Minnesota (RV), Tennessee, Central Florida, West Virginia, and No. 9 Yale in addition to Michigan State, which is also receiving votes in the preseason survey.
The Big Ten is projected to have a strong season, with seven Big Ten crews mentioned in the poll, including No. 1 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, No. 14 Indiana, an No. 15 Wisconsin, in addition to the Spartans, Gophers, and Iowa all receiving votes.
Each set of races starts on eight-minute centers, in the following order: varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight/third varsity eight, second varsity eight, and second varsity four, In MSU's sessions, a second novice eight/fourth varsity eight race will be held prior to the varsity eight race. .
The regatta is broken up into three sessions of three groups each. On Saturday morning, the Spartans are paired with Central Florida, Oklahoma, and Minnesota, with the start of racetimes for the group beginning at 11:06 am. The afternoon session will see the Spartans line up with West Virginia, No. 2 Virginia, and No. 9 Yale; racing for that group, the middle group of the three, will begin at 4 pm. On Sunday, the Spartans will be in the final racing group, taking on Alabama, Kansas, and Tennessee, with racing starting at 11 am.
The Spartans return 18 rowers and two coxswains from their four Big Ten Championship varsity entries in 2014, and add seven previous novices to the varsity roster. In addition, 19 novices joined the program this past fall. MSU's roster features eight seniors: Joanna Beaton, Sarah Crosby, Emma Green, Olivia Jamrog, Sarah Kovacs, Kimi Lakanen, and coxswains Chelsea Kneuer and Katie Trahan.
Spartan head coach Matt Weise was sure to line up his crews against stiff competition in the fall, racing 2014 NCAA qualifiers Michigan, Notre Dame, Indiana, and defending national champion Ohio State. In addition, the novices competed against Michigan's first-year rowers, dominating the Wolverines by winning nine of 10 races.
