Spartans Finish Opening Races at Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge, Tenn - Michigan State had a bit of a frustrating day in the season-opening regatta on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Saturday, as the Spartans lined up with some of the top crews in the country in the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational.
The Spartans were missing some athletes due to illness and injury, which forced some late lineup-shuffling after their training trip to Fort Gaines, Georgia.
Michigan State's novices had a very strong morning, as the novice eight bested Oklahoma, Alabama, and UCF by open water, crossing the line in a time of 6:12.837, nearly 13 seconds better than second-place Oklahoma (6:25.695). The second novice eight raced Alabama, besting the Crimson tide by more than 10 seconds (6:42.633 - 6:52.947). The three Spartan varsity entries all finished third behind Minnesota, Oklahoma, and UCF, as the Golden Gophers swept the three races, all by a length.
No. 2 Virginia and No. 9 Yale were MSU's afternoon opponents, and the Cavaliers certainly made a statement, winning each of the two varsity eight races by open water. The Spartan novice eight finished third, nearly equaling their morning time but finding itself eight and 10 seconds behind Yale and Virginia, respectively. The second novice eight raced Louisville, posting a six-second victory over the host Cardinals.
The Spartans wrap up the regatta on Sunday morning, lining up with Kansas, Tennessee, and Alabama.
