SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team fell to No. 11 Ohio State, 7-0, but defeated the University of Detroit Mercy, 4-0, on Sunday. MSU moves to 10-9, while OSU and Detroit move to 14-6 and 4-9, respectively.
At the OSU Varsity Tennis Center, Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane scored an 8-3 victory over the No. 3 doubles team in the nation, Kevin Metka and Ralf Steinbach, of Ohio State. It was the fifth ranked win for Jadun and Mullane this season, who are 5-2 overall against ranked opponents.
Ohio State won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches over the Spartans, and swept through the singles matches. The Buckeyes have four of the top 115 players in the nation in their singles lineup, and the No. 34 doubles pair at the No. 2 doubles spot.
"They're a very stingy team," head coach Gene Orlando said. "They never let us in the match.
"The freshmen competed well, though, which was a bright spot for us."
Michigan State then had to travel to Southfield to take on the Titans at the Franklin Athletic Club. The Spartans started strong, as Gijs Linders teamed up with Jadun at No. 1 doubles to defeated Jay Joshi and Ismail Kadyrov, 8-2. Detroit evened the doubles matches by winning the No. 2 doubles match, as Nathan Ponton and Patryk Koscielski defeated Doug Zade and Jasper Koenen, 8-5. Mac Roy and Michael Dube topped Rafael Orantes and Chance Conley at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point for MSU.
The Spartans then took the first three singles matches to win the contest. Jadun, Dube and Koenen all won their matches in straight sets at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
"It was a long day," Orlando said. "But we were able to get the win (at Detroit) and get out."
Michigan State goes back out on the road next Friday to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, at 4 p.m.
