Spartans Fall to No. 18 Louisville, No. 14 Notre Dame

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State fell in a double dual to No. 14 Notre Dame and No. 18 Louisville on Saturday morning,struggling against a pair of top-20 crews in its first dual racing of the season. The teams raced in Columbus, on Ohio State's home course.
The highlight of the day came from MSU's novice eight boat, which won both of its races - one by four-tenths of a second vs. Louisville, and the race against the Irish by open water - to improve to a cumulative 4-1 on the season. The Spartans did not fare as well in the other boats, as both varsity eight and varsity four entries went 0-2 on the day, falling against the Cardinals in the morning and the Irish in the afternoon.
"It was a bit of a frustrating day - we just didn't execute the raceplan in a lot of circumstances," said head coach Matt Weise. "We're seeing progress when we practice, and it's not translating when we're lining up against another crew to race. We have to build confidence - confidence in ourselves, in the work we're putting in, and in the process. It's still early, but it's something that we have to work to change immediately. We'll look to make some positive changes this week and next. Our next races are Big Ten races, and will be a good measure of our progress."
MSU will head to Ann Arbor on April 11 to line up with Indiana and Iowa in the first Big Ten double dual of the season.
