YPSILANTI, Mich. - Helped by a pair of four-run innings, Eastern Michigan defeated the Michigan State baseball team, 10-5, on Wednesday evening at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti. Trailing 2-0, the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and added six more over the next four innings to come out on top.
EMU outhit the Spartans, 13-10, led by John Rubino, who went 4-for-5.
Mark Weist paced MSU (12-14) at the plate with two hits, including his first home run of the year, and two RBIs.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning courtesy of an EMU error. Cam Gibson made it 2-0 the next inning with an RBI single through the middle that plated Kory Young.
The Eagles (10-17) rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs all with two outs. MSU starting pitcher Alex Troop sandwiched two strikeouts around a hit batter to start the inning, but then gave up four straight hits, giving the Eagles their 4-2 lead. Mitchell McGeein capped the rally with a two-RBI double to left center.
Weist's two-out, RBI single pulled MSU to within a run, 4-3, in the top of the fourth inning, but again the Eagles were able to push across another two-out run in the bottom of the fame. With Jordan Peterson caught in a run down between first and second base, Rubino scored from third base to make it a 5-3 game.
Eastern was able to put the game away with another four-run inning in the fifth. An RBI single, throwing error and sacrifice fly got the Eagles their four runs as they went ahead, 9-3.
Michael Mioduszewski's RBI single in the sixth inning made the score 10-3.
Weist homered to start the seventh to make it a 10-4 game. It looked as though the Spartans would further cut into the EMU lead as they loaded the bases, but reliever Michael Marsinek got Chad Roskelly to ground out to end the inning.
The Spartans got another run back in the top of the eighth with a one-out RBI double by Blaise Salter. With Salter on second and Weist on third, the Eagles went to another relief pitcher, this time Sam Delaplane, to retire the next to MSU hitters and keep the score 10-5.
The Spartans left 13 runners on base in the game.
Troop (2-2) pitched into the fifth inning before being replaced by Walter Borkovich. Troop allowed nine runs (seven earned) off 10 hits, struck out four batters and walked two.
EMU starting pitcher Kyle Huckaby was credited with the win, allowing two runs off five hits in three hits.
Michigan State will travel to Oregon this weekend to take on the Ducks in a non-conference showdown. The three-game series will begin Friday at 9 p.m. ET.
