BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State (13-15, 4-7) ended its regular season with a win, taking down No. 43 Indiana (17-10, 6-5) 5-2 on Sunday at the Indiana University Tennis Center.
"We had a tough stretch," head coach Gene Orlando said. "But the ability to bounce back is really a testament to the toughness of the guys, and their attitude and the hard work they have put in."
As was the case against Purdue on Friday, the Spartans struck first, winning the doubles point. Doug Zade paired with Brett Forman to win the No. 3 doubles match against Raheel Manji and Sven Lalic, 8-6. Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane followed up with an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot over Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette.
The teams traded points in singles for the first couple of matches. Indiana's Sven Lacic won at No. 3 singles, then Forman defeated Bednarczyk at the No. 2 position, 6-0, 7-5. Manji took the No. 4 singles point to make the overall score 2-2.
Michigan State took over the match from there. After losing the first set 6-1, Gijs Linders took the match at No. 1 singles against Monette, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Jasper Koenen then clinched the match for the Spartans, defeating Stefan Lugonjic, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Mac Roy won the final point against Matthew McCoy, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9), at No. 5 singles to make the score 5-2.
"We will judge our season by how we finish," Orlando said. "We haven't finished yet."
The Spartans will travel to Champaign, Illinois, for the Big Ten Tournament next week. Illinois will host the tournament at the Atkins Tennis Center. Michigan State earned the No. 7 seed, and will play the No. 10 seed, Nebraska, on Thursday at 2 p.m.
