Rowers Struggle at Clemson Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State had a rough weekend at the Clemson Invitational, as injuries caused some havoc and the Spartans struggled to find success despite a strong week of practice.
The novice eight continued to be the strongest boat in MSU's arsenal, posting the best times of the weekend of any boats and coming away with a pair of wins and a second-place finish to No. 1 Ohio State by three-tenths of a second in Sunday's race.
"We're in a very frustrating position at the moment," said head coach Matt Weise. "We're already not fielding a second four because we've had so many injuries - and we just don't have enough to put together another four. This weekend, we saw the same thing happen with the second novice eight. We don't make excuses, but I feel badly that we're scratching entries because we don't have enough healthy bodies to compete.
"The issues with the other boats have less to do with injuries - but we just haven't applied our practice to our raceday performance. We feel good about how we practice all week, and see something different on raceday. There's got to be a focus on carrying it over to make us more prepared to race and showing what we know we're capable of."
The Spartans race in Columbus next weekend, taking on Michigan and Syracuse.
