Evanston, Ill. - The No. 63 Spartans season came to a close on Thursday at the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament as the No. 54 Golden Gophers defeated the MSU, 4-1. The Spartans finish with a winning record for the second-straight year at 16-9.
"I am proud of the girls this season," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We were competitive today in doubles, but it is always hard to win four singles matches against a good team. Our program is heading in the right direction, and we hope to keep the momentum going next season."
The Golden Gophers started the day taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Erin Faulkner and senior Catherine Parenteau fell to Tereza Brichacova and Paula Rincon-Otero at No. 1 doubles, 8-5. After trailing 4-1, sophomore Athena Trouillot and freshman Allie Baer fought-back to tie the match at seven. Juila Courter and Jessika Mozia won the tiebreaker, 7-4, to take the match 8-7. Freshman Lexi Baylis and junior Emily Meyers were leading at No. 3 doubles before the match was called.
At No. 5 singles, Trouillot lost to Julia Courter, 6-4, 6-1. Trouillot finishes the season at 20-17 in singles.
Meyers fell at No. 6 singles to Paula Rincon-Otero, 6-4, 6-2. The junior finishes the season at 21-14 in singles play.
Faulkner got the Spartans on the board with a win over Tereza Brichacova at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1. She finishes the year at 21-15 in singles.
Minnesota clinched the match with a win at No. 3 singles. Jessika Mozia defeated freshman Aslina Chua, 6-3, 6-4.
