EAST LANSING - Michigan State had a pair of players earn All-Big Ten accolades, while three more were named to the All-freshman team, it was announced by the conference on Tuesday. Senior third baseman Mark Weist was voted to the All-Big Ten first team and senior first baseman Ryan Krill was selected to the second team. Outfielder Brandon Hughes, pitcher Andrew Gonzalez and catcher Chad Roskelly garnered all-freshman team recognition.
Weist has been one of the Spartans' most consistent hitters in 2015 and currently ranks second on the team with a .335 batting average. The native of Saline has recorded at least one hit in 44 of 54 games this season and his 22 multi-hit games lead the Spartans.
Weist, who sat out the 2014 season after transferring from Spring Arbor University, leads the Spartans in doubles (17) and hits (73). He enters Wednesday's Big Ten Tournament game vs. Maryland with a seven-game hitting streak. Weist has started every game at third base this season.
In the field, Weist has a .924 fielding percentage.
Krill has posted the best season of his career in 2015. He led the conference in Big Ten play in nearly every offensive category, including: batting average (.451), slugging percentage (.857), on-base percentage (.545), RBIs (36) and home runs (10).
Krill's .363 batting average on the season ranks third in the league and his 12 home runs are second most. His 53 RBIs are the second most in the conference in 2015 and are tied for the 10th-highest single season total in MSU history.
He was named Big Ten Player of the Week for the first time in his career earlier this season after a 5-for-6, six-RBI performance in the series finale vs. Northwestern on April 12. The native of Kalamazoo brings a career-long 19-game hitting streak into Wednesday's game.
Krill was also MSU's recipient of the Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Hughes has seen the most action of any Spartan freshman this season, starting 52 games in the outfield. He has a .272 batting average and 27 RBIs. His six home runs are tied with Weist for second on the team and are the most among any Big Ten rookie outfielder.
Hughes started every Big Ten game and is hitting .312 in conference play. His 29 hits in league led all freshmen outfielders in the league.
Hughes, a native of Sterling Heights, has at least one hit in 12 of the last 14 games.
Roskelly has started 46 games behind the plate in 2015 - more than any other rookie catcher in the league. The redshirt freshman led all Big Ten rookie catchers in batting average (.272), hits (50) and RBIs (30).
In Big Ten play, Roskelly hit .253 with seven doubles and 12 RBIs. His best performance of the season came in a win at Central Michigan on May 12 when he went 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
Gonzalez is 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA in 16 appearances this season. He has 21 strikeouts and nine walks in 37 innings on the mound. He made five starts this season, two of which came in Big Ten play.
Gonzalez made his first collegiate start vs. Clemson on March 11. He picked up his first collegiate win vs. USC Upstate on March 15, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
