Seventy-Eight Spartans Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Big Ten Conference released the list of student-athletes who received the 2014-15 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award today. The conference recognized 781 student-athletes for earning a grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the 2014-15 academic year, included in the list were 78 Michigan State student-athletes.
The Distinguished Scholar Award, which began after the 2008-09 academic year, acts as a supplement to the Academic All-Big Ten program. The award honors letterwinners in at least their second academic year at the institution, who reach the 3.7 GPA plateau for the academic year, excluding summer school.
MSU had the second-most honorees among conference schools, trailing only Ohio State (80).
In all, 119 Big Ten student-athletes accomplished a perfect 4.0 GPA, including 18 Spartans. The MSU student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA were men's basketball's Colby Wollenman, women's basketball's Cara Miller, men's cross country/track & field's Ryan Haag and Garret Zuk, women's cross country/track & field's Melanie Brender and Alexis Wiersma, football's Mike Sadler, women's rowing's Joanna Beaton and Olivia Jamrog, men's soccer's Andrew Herr, Ryan Keener and Adam Montague, softball's Ellie Stoffer and Kristina Zalewski, men's swimming & diving's David Zoltowski, women's swimming & diving's Kelly Delorme and Hannah Pugh and wrestling's Joe Johnson.
