EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State field hockey was stopped, 5-1, by No. 9 Maryland in the weekend wrap-up in College Park, Md. The Spartans move to 3-7 overall, 0-3 in the Big Ten, but will look to bounce back at home against Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 2.
"To start the game with Maryland scoring four goals on four shots is a tough way to begin," said head coach Helen Knull. "We stuck to the game plan in the second half and created more opportunities for ourselves."
Maryland redshirt senior Welma Luus was the first to strike in today's contest, converting off of a pass from freshman Linnea Gonzales for her sixth goal of the year. The 1-0 lead came in the second minute of play.
A hard shot from Gonzales resulted in a goal off of a penalty corner, giving the Terrapins a 2-0 lead over the Spartans at the 8:59 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Miller made her season debut at the 11:00 mark in today's game, playing 59 minutes in the net for MSU and recording a career-high 11 saves. Three of the 11 came in the first half, while eight saves were made in the second half.
A scoop shot from Maryland sophomore Carrie Hanks off of a penalty corner resulted in the third goal of the day for the Terrapins. Maryland led Michigan State 3-0 at the 19:44 mark, but Gonzales found the net just one minute later to make it a 4-0 game at the 20:58 mark.
Maryland's Brooke Adler found the back of the net in the 29th minute, extending the lead to 5-0 over the MSU heading into halftime.
The Spartans got on the board in the second half as Shelby Supica scored off of a rebound to make it a 5-1 game in the 46th minute. This marks Supica's first goal of the season and second of her career.
The MSU defense proved strong in the second half, holding Maryland scoreless with 11 shot attempts and two penalty corners.
The Terrapins out-shot the Spartans 25-8 on the game, alongside a 7-3 edge in penalty corner opportunities.
The Spartans have yet to be shut out in the 2015 season, with 10 athletes contributing to 23 total goals.
"As I tell the team every day, we have to keep sticking to the process and the outcomes will come," said Knull. "We are looking forward to returning home next weekend and having another opportunity to compete."
Michigan State will return home to face Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. and Pacific on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be played at Ralph Young Field.
