EAST LANSING, Michigan - The Michigan State swimming and diving team concluded a two-meet road trip weekend. The Spartans dropped both decisions this weekend, falling to Cincinnati on Friday, November 4, followed by a loss to Indiana on Saturday, November 5.
"At the end of the weekend I am pretty disappointed with the way things worked out. We came down here, and were expecting better results, unfortunately that didn't happen but we will get back to the drawing board and be ready to compete again," said head coach Matt Gianiodis.
On Friday, the women's diving team put on a performance and swept Cincinnati in the 3 meter dive taking the top three places. Senior Madeline Sewell took first, sophomore Morgan Wellenzohn finished second, and sophomore Julia Oppedisano rounded it out with a third place finish.
"We had a decent day, we had a couple top place finishes. Our divers had a really good showing. Madeline did a great job in her hometown so that was nice to see," said Gianiodis.
Both the men's and women's team swept in the 200 yard medley relay earning two first place finishes. The men's team touched the pad at 1:30.95, and the women finished with a time of 1:44.78.
Sophomore Cathryn Armstrong had a good show in the 100 yard backstroke, to earn a second place finish on a time 57.52. Alex Trompke finished first in the 100 yard backstroke, touching the pad at 50.57, and freshman Scott Piper was close behind finishing second.
Piper had another top finish on Friday in the 200 yard backstroke. He got nine points for the team with his first place finish on a time of 1:52.16. In his last and final event he took another first in the 200 yard IM, finishing 1:56.07.
"Overall I was kind of disappointed with the day. I thought we would have competed a lot harder than we did. I give Cincinnati a lot of credit, they broke six pool records while we were there, and that was impressive, but we still were looking for better performances on our end."
Despite a few top performers, the Spartans ultimately fell to Cincinnati Friday evening, November 4.
Saturday the Spartans found themselves with five first place finishes, but still dropped the contest to Indiana. The women were defeated 172-115, and the men fell 169-119.
In the ninth event, freshman Ellie Roche nabbed a first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke. She clocked in at 1:04.84, and edged the second place finisher out by more than one second. Senior Alec Kandt was the next Spartan to earn a first place finish. He finished with a time of 56.77 in the 100 yard backstroke.
Racheal Bukowski was first in the 50 yard freestyle, marking a time of 23.42. In the 17th event, the 100 yard freestyle, Madison Mullins was first on a time of 53.81. The final first place Spartan finisher was Sam Hiller in the 200 yard backstroke on a time of 1:53.40.
Michigan State returns to action on Friday, November 11 where they will face off against Bowling Green on the road. The meet is set to start at 6 p.m. All results will be posted to msuspartans.com.
