Burnham in Contention at Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship

NEW ORLEANS â€" Sophomore Sarah Burnham fired her second straight under-par round at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Monday and is just three shots off the lead heading into Tuesday's third and final round.
A day after carding a 2-under 70, Burnham remained in the hunt for medalist honors with a 1-under 71 and is 3-under for the tournament at 141, good for a tie in fourth place. She is three strokes behind No. 6 Lauren Kim of Stanford (68-70—138). Burnham collected five birdies in her round for the second day in a row and carded her seventh under-par round of the season.
As a team, the No. 32 Spartans improved by 12 shots with a 1-over 289 and moved up two places on the leaderboard into a tie for 10th place at 14-over-par (301-289—590). The 289 marked the second-lowest single round of the season for MSU.
The 17-team Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, which is being hosted by Tulane at the English Turn Golf and Country Club, features 12 programs ranked in the Golfstat Top 50. No. 11 Florida, led by former Spartan All-American and head coach Emily Bastel Glaser, leads the field with a 7-under 569 (288-281).
Senior Alison Knowles carded her second-best round of the season with a 2-under 70 to jump up 25 places on the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd (77-70—147). Fellow senior Gabby Yurik fired a 1-over 73 and is tied for 39th at 4-over 148 (75-73).
Redshirt sophomore Katie Sharp was MSU's fourth-counting score with a 3-over 75 and is tied for 64th at 154.
Freshman Carolyn Markley owns a 36-hole total of 167 (88-79).
The third and final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate is set for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday; MSU will tee off from holes 10-12 along with Virginia and UCLA. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
