EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's closed its home weekend with a pair of victories on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility against Cleveland State and Bowling Green. The Spartans pitched a shutout in both outings, 7-0.
"We have played strong competition so far and the three losses we have are from top-45 teams in the country," said head coach Simone Jardim. "To me, this is what is expected of this team. We have high expectations and high goals. This is proving we can do it. This weekend was all about us and taking care of business. We worked on some things we have been talking about and went out aggressive."
In the day's opening match, the Spartans (7-3) took an early lead over CSU (3-5) by winning a pair of doubles matches. Freshman Davina Nguyen and junior Athena Trouillot won their second-straight match since teaming back up on Friday, Feb. 26. MSU's leading duo with 10 wins this season defeated Victoria Bensimon and Morgan Nix, 6-3. Sophomores Allie Baer and Aslina Chua clinched the match on court three in convincing fashion, 6-0, over Mathilde Orange and Princess Gbadamosi.
Sophomore Allie Baer continued her unbeaten spring, moving to 3-0 with a win over Nix, 6-2, 6-3. Winner of her last three matches entering the day, senior Emily Meyers moved to 7-1 in duals with a win over Aleksandra Golawska, 7-5, 6-1.
Playing at No. 1 singles for just the second time in her collegiate career, Nguyen downed Orange in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the victory for MSU.
Chua was one of four Spartans to win in straight sets against Cleveland State, defeating Gbadamosi, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Emily Metcalf moved up to No. 2 singles for the first time this season. Metcalf entered the weekend 4-0 in the No. 5 slot, but won her first match at No. 2 after dropping the opening set against Isabella Spindler, 6-4. Metcalf took the second frame 6-3 before claiming the super tiebreaker.
Trouillot closed out the morning's match with a three-set victory against Victoria Bensimon, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6.
"It is a confidence builder for us that we can win at any spot," said Jardim. "I am proud of them, and the further we get into the season and keep progressing, this will be big to be able to have all of these wins under the belt. When you rack up those wins you say, 'okay I can win tennis matches.' It builds up confidence."
In the night cap against BGSU (1-10), MSU won the doubles point for the third-straight match. Baer and junior Anna Zelechonok made quick work on court three of Bowling Green's Antonina Farrar and Marina Ferrero, 6-0. The point was decided on court one with Meyers and Metcalf defeating Paula Comelia Aguilo and Drew Fillis, 6-1.
Meyers had a dominating match on court five against the Falcons' Farrar, clinching the bout, 6-0, 6-0. Trouillot finished her match in the same fashion just minutes after Meyers, beating Floyd, 6-0, 6-0.
Chua clinched the team battle with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court three against Drew Fillis.
Playing in her first dual match as a Spartan, junior Emmy Virkus claimed a back-and-forth first set, 7-5, over Ferrero. Virkus fell behind 5-1 in the second, but roared back with six-straight games to claim the match 7-5.
"This is great to get an opportunity to get a chance to play a match like this," Jardim said. "She (Emmy Virkus) is a great kid and played better when we had the team watching. She really stepped up to the occasion."
Michigan State returns to the courts in Charleston, South Carolina, against College of Charleston and Charleston Southern from March 10-11.
