EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis hits the road this weekend for a pair of Big Ten road matches. The Spartans open the weekend at Nebraska on Friday, April 15, at 5:00 p.m., before traveling to Iowa to face off against Iowa on Sunday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m.
"This weekend is an important weekend for us as we are fighting for a spot in the top 10 of the Big Ten," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We feel ready to face the challenge of going on the road and getting some wins. Both Nebraska and Iowa are good teams, but we are capable of beating them both. It should be great competition, and I'm looking forward to our team rising to the occasion."
After being one of two to post an unblemished mark for MSU (10-9, 2-5 B1G) last weekend in singles, senior Emily Meyers moved to 15-3 this spring and is nearly perfect in league play at 6-1. Meyers has amassed 71 career victories in her four-year career, needing just three more to take over as Michigan State's all-time career wins leader in singles play.
Freshman Emily Metcalf, also riding a three-match win streak along with Meyers, is 13-8 after a pair of victories last weekend against Maryland and Rutgers.
Last time out, the Spartans stumbled against Maryland in East Lansing, dropping the doubles point and claiming just two of the singles matches. MSU split the weekend with a 5-2 victory over Rutgers, winning singles No. 3-6 and taking the doubles point without needing a third, deciding bout.
The Cornhuskers currently are 17-6 with a 4-5 record in the Big Ten. Nebraska comes into the weekend losers of four straight, most recently dropping a 7-0 decision to Ohio State. Vasanti Shinde paces the Cornhuskers with a mark of 15-6. Ten of her wins have come at No. 4 singles.
After opening the season by winning eight of their first 10, the Hawkeyes have struggled since the start of conference play, dropping nine of the last 10. Iowa is 10-13 on the year and 0-9 in Big Ten play. Last weekend, the Hawkeyes fell to Ohio State and Penn State. Doubles duo Zoe Douglas and Anastasia Reimchen are ranked No. 49 in the latest ITA Women's Tennis ranking. The duo knocked off the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the country last Friday, defeating Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford, 6-2, of Ohio State. Douglas and Reimchen are 7-3 this season together.
