East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State heads to Clemson, South Carolina for one of the largest in-season regattas in the country, the Clemson Invitational. The racing will be held on Lake Hartwell.
In all, 20 crews will compete in the two-day event, featuring eight crews ranked in the CRCA Division I top 20 poll, and three others which are receiving votes.
In the first session on Saturday morning, the Spartans kick off racing with an 8:30 start in the varsity eight. In all races in the morning session, Spartans will see Tennessee, Columbia, Louisville, No. 4 Ohio State, UCLA (RV) and Oklahoma, with the exception of the novice eights, who will race the Michigan novice eight, third varsity eights from Texas, Virginia, UCF, and Louisville, and a fourth varsity eight from Clemson.
In the afternoon session, MSU lines up with Cornell, San Diego (RV), No. 4 Ohio State, No. 3 Virginia, and No. 8 Texas. The novice boat is MSU's first race of the sesson at 5:08 pm, lining up with Virginia, Washington State, Clemson, UCF, and Indiana; the racing progresses toward the varsity eights, with a 6:36 start time for that race.
On Sunday morning, the Spartans see Oregon State, Columbia, No. 13 Indiana, No. 8 Texas, Clemson, and Tennessee in their schedule of races, beginning at 8:45 with the varsity eights.
A complete racing schedule with lane assignments can be found here.
Head coach Matt Weise is looking forward to the weekend of racing.
"We weren't happy with our performance in our varsity eights or fours last weekend against Rutgers or Ohio State, and seeing OSU again this weekend twice will give us a bit of a direct measuring stick on our progress," said the head coach. "The competition we will see this weekend will push us - and how we respond to both last week's performance and this week's challenges are both really important as we start to get closer to the Big Ten Championships. Our novices have been making great strides, and them getting to test themselves against some of these fast crews will really give them a good idea of where they are at as well. It should be a great weekend of racing for all the crews."
Live racing results are available through the Clemson Invitational website, and all three sessions will also have a live webstream at either ESPN3 (Saturday morning) or on TigerCast at ClemsonTigers.com.
