East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State took part in the first two sessions of racing at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday on Lake Hartwell.
MSU’s varsity eight had a fourth-place finish in the morning session, but was securely in the top half of the race and fighting for second behind No. 3 Ohio State as it came down the course with Louisville and UCLA. At the finish, UCLA posted a time of 6:48.2 to take second, more than 10 seconds behind the Buckeyes; Louisville edged MSU by a second for third place, as the Cardinals crossed the line in 6:51.5, and MSU right on their tail in 6:52.6. MSU was open water ahead of fifth-place Columbia, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. In the evening session, MSU got to see the Buckeyes again, along with No. 4 Virginia and No. 8 Texas; Ohio State was a length ahead of the Cavaliers, who were in turn a length ahead of the Longhorns. San Diego took fourth in a time of 6:28.7, and MSU in 6:32.50 for fifth. The entire heat was much faster than the morning times, but MSU’s margin behind the Buckeyes was similar in both races (15 seconds in the morning, 17 in the afternoon).
MSU’s novice eight was paired with several third novice boats for both sessions of racing. In the morning, MSU was the top-finishing novice entry, open water ahead of Michigan; the Spartans were fourth overall in a time of 7:25.7, behind Virginia, Texas, and Louisville. IN the evening session, MSU was the only novice entry in a field of third varsity boats. MSU was clocked in a time of 7:04.27, behind 3Vs from Virginia (6:48.8), Washington State (6:52.9) and four seats of open water behind host Clemson (6:58.0).
THe second varsity eight and varsity four both had a bit of rough racing - the 2V was fifth in the morning session, and sixth in the evening. The varsity four was seventh and fifth in the day’s racing.
The Spartans conclude action at the Clemson Invitational Sunday morning, where they will line up with Columbia, Indiana, Texas, Clemson, and Tennessee.
