NOTES AND NOTABLES
Michigan State, which sits outside the CRCA Division I top 20 poll this week, heads to Columbus this weekend to race Ohio State and No. 16 Syracuse.
No. 3 Ohio State hosts Saturday's races, held on the Buckeyes' home course on the Scioto River at Griggs Reservoir. Racing is scheduled to begin at 11 am with a two-boat race between MSU and the Buckeyes, followed by the novice eights at 11:20, moving forward to the varsity eight race. The races go off on 20-minute centers, with all races three-boat affairs with the exception of the second novice eight.
MSU has raced Ohio State three times over the last two weekends - twice last week at the Clemson Invitational, and in the Big Ten Double Dual at Rutgers on April 9. On March 12, MSU took on Michigan, Virginia, and Clemson on the Buckeyes' home course in the Big Ten/ACC Double Duals.
"We've certainly had a good look at Ohio State," joked head coach Matt Weise. "That's a very good crew, but we have to worry more about what we are doing and how we attack the race. We're familiar with the course, and we're now at the point of the season where we're needing to put things together - we're a month from Big Tens, and it's a time that we should be finding that extra gear to get us more speed. Every weekend is a good opportunity for us to gauge progress, so we're looking to see what advancements we make this week."
The Spartans raced at the Clemson Invitational last weekend, a large regatta featuring eight ranked crews (and three more receiving votes in the CRCA poll) among the 20 participating teams. The Spartans have continued to improve throughout the spring season, with the varsity eight and novice eight boats distinguishing themselves among the top crews they have faced. MSU has also battled some injury issues, but looks to start building toward next month's Big Ten Championships as athletes start to return to action.
