NOTES AND NOTABLES
Michigan State prepares for its final competition before the Big Ten Championships, heading down the road to take on Louisville and host Michigan.
No. 10 Michigan hosts Saturday's races, run out of UM's boathouse on Belleville Lake. Races will begin on 18-minute centers, starting at 9 am with a two-boat race between the second novice eights from MSU and the Wolverines. From there, all will be three-boat races, starting with the novice eights at 9:18, moving forward to the varsity eight race.
MSU has seen both of these crews previously, racing Michigan in the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual April 2 on this same course. MSU lined up with Louisville in one of the three sessions at the Clemson Invitational, a 20-school regatta held April 16-17. The Spartans are using the racing as a measuring stick, as the varsity eight finished a length behind the Wolverines at the beginning of the month, and was edged by the Cardinals by a margin of 1.1 seconds in South Carolina.
While MSU's varsity eight and novice eight has shown steady improvement throughout the season, injuries have caused frequent lineup changes in the second varsity eight and both fours - perhaps stunting some development as athletes have been in and out of different boats.
"We've been fortunate to have good health with our crews in the varsity eight and novice eight, and the benefits of a consistent lineup have been evident there. We haven't been as lucky with the fours or our second eight, and we haven't seen the same type of progressions that we wanted or expected as a result. However, it's something that we're hoping we can work through over the next two weeks. We're getting ready for some good racing on Saturday, and we're excited for these second matchups with these crews."
The Spartans were a bit frustrated with their performance last weekend at Ohio State, racing both the No. 3 Buckeyes and No. 16 Syracuse. Weise was looking forward to the week of practice to get some technical changes in place that he believed would help his crews.
Michigan will stream racing through its facebook page.
