Michigan State dropped its first of two weekend contests on Saturday, April 9, falling to Maryland, 5-2, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU is now 9-9 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten, while the Terripans improve to 8-9 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
"Doubles is such a momentum builder," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We didn't perform to our ability there. We came out, and they were more aggressive and we took a step back and played a little passive. Singles was by far the best we've played as a team as a whole. All six were in it. Unfortunately, to pull out four matches against a team like Maryland is hard, so going into tomorrow, I think what we need to do is really be ready to take the doubles point and know that it's going to set us up for success."
The Spartans fell behind after the doubles point where Maryland took all three matches.
Freshman Emily Metcalf got thing started for MSU in singles play, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 to improve to 12-8 on the season and 3-3 in Big Ten action.
Senior Emily Meyers defeated the Terps' Cassandre Thebault, winning the third set 6-4 after splitting the first two, 6-2, 4-6. Meyers is now 14-3 and has a team-high in wins in Big Ten play with a 5-1 record. "Not just today, but Emily's contribution to this program is amazing," said Jardim. "She's been clutch all along. She's playing with a lot of sense of urgency with it being her last year. She's done amazing, and I'm really proud of her."
Michigan State closes out its weekend on Sunday, April 10, with another home match vs. Rutgers (6-11, 0-7 B1G) at 11 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
