EAST LANSING, Mich. -Michigan State designated hitter Zack McGuire has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The righty hit .500 with three doubles and five RBIs to go along with his first home run of the season in four games last week. McGuire led the Spartans to a 3-1 record, including a series win over No. 16 Michigan.
The sophomore started his big week by hitting a home run in his first start in a month in a 4-1 win over Toledo on Wednesday. McGuire then recorded a double in each of the three weekend games, including a 3-for-4 effort at the plate on Saturday. The Sterling Heights native smacked a go-ahead, two-RBI single to cap off a six-run inning in Saturday's comeback victory before driving in the game-winning run again on Sunday.
"It's exciting and I'm very happy for Zack," said head coach Jake Boss Jr. "It's well-earned because he's worked hard and was ready for the moment and stepped up when his name was called."
McGuire is the Spartans first Big Ten Player of the Week since Ryan Krill in April, 2015.
With no midweek games due to finals, the Spartans will get back into action next weekend when they host Nebraska on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at McLane Stadium.
