EAST LANSING - Michigan State junior Sarah Burnham has been named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Thursday, Sept. 29. Burnham finished second in last weekend's Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West.
Burnham fired a 71 and 70, respectively, in the opening two rounds of the tournament, putting her in a first-place tie after day one. She followed the next day with an even-par 72 to finish the 33rd annual event with a 3-under-par 213 â€" one shot back of medalist Dewi Weber from tournament champion Miami.
Burnham's 213 was the lowest ever by a Spartan at the Mary Fossum Invitational.
Through five rounds this season, Burnham has a team-leading 70.4 scoring average. The weekly conference accolade is the third of the Maple Grove, Minnesota, native's career, having earned the honor twice last season (Oct. 28, 2015 and Feb. 24, 2016).
Michigan State will be back in action Oct. 14-16 at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
