ROCHESTER, Mich. - Michigan State swimming and diving men and women's team defeated Oakland University in its dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 21. The women won by a score of 157-143, while the men defeated Oakland 165-133.
"Good thing is we won both meets," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "The better thing is that we swam really well, we dove really well. We had a lot of really great individual performances which was good. It was nice for our whole team to win a couple meets."
The women began the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay on a time of 1:44.10. The team consisted of sophomore Cathryn Armstrong, senior Kennedy Cutler, senior Sarah Love, and junior Rachael Bukowski.
In order, junior Haley Kornburger, sophomore Courtney Aycock, freshman Kennedy Truex, and junior Anna Stephens took second, third and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Kornburger the top finisher, recorded a time of 1:54.05.
Armstrong won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.23, while junior Madison Nowak was close behind with a second place finish and time of 56.28. Sophomores Ana Sortland and Ellie Roche took second and third place, respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Emily Burnett took first in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the pad at 2:03.51, while junior Rebecca Hannon took second on a time of 2:06.92. Kornburger won the 500-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 5:04.59.
Bukowski garnered another first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.08. Bukowski followed up with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.21. Love also tallied a first in the 100-yard butterfly for a time of 56.73.
The women swept the one and three-meter diving. Julia Oppedisano took first in the one-meter dive with a final score of 283.65. Morgan Wellenzohn, Madeline Sewell and Heidi Surdyk took second, third, and fourth respectively.
For the three-meter dive, Wellenzhon took first with a final score of 262.05, while Surdyk and Oppedisano took second and third place with scores of 250.78 and 246.23.
On the men's side, junior Joe Szczupakiewicz picked up a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:27.66, while senior Jon Burke touched the pad second on a time of 9:28.16.
Junior Nick Leshok kept it rolling for the Spartans with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the pad at 1:40.46. Junior Alex Trompke garnered a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke for a time of 50.41.
Senior Alec Kandt also picked up a first-place in the 100-yard breaststroke for a time of 54.84 to earn nine points for MSU. Freshman Phillip Meffert and senior Ben Martin also picked up points in the 100-yard breaststroke with fourth and fifth place finishes.
Freshmen Michael Schwers and Scott Piper earned first and second-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly. Schwers took first with a time of 1:50.24, while Piper finished second with a time of 1:50.92.
Piper continued the day with a first-place in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the pad at 1:49.74. Senior Sam Hiller also competed in the event and earned a third-place finish.
Kandt added another first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:05.36. Junior Mitch Strahlman, Meffert, and Martin also swam in the 200-yard breaststroke and finished third, fourth and fifth respectively picking up points for the Spartans.
Szczupakiewicz picked up his second first-place mark in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:34.56. Piper added his final first-place finish and concluded the swimming portion up for the Spartans touching the pad at 1:52.05 in the 200-yard IM.
For diving for the men, senior Brennan LaBar took first in the one-meter dive with a score of 318.45, while freshman Matthew Delagarza took second. In the three-meter dive, LaBar took second and Delagarza finished third.
"I think the big highlight for me was probably Scott Piper, he won two events and he did so well," said Gianiodis. "Our freshman swam well, our upperclassmen swam well. All-in-all I was proud of the effort the teams put in today."
Michigan State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at home in the Charles McCaffree Pool. MSU will host Michigan at 12 p.m.
