EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State student-athletes participated in the annual Teams for Toys on Sunday. The holiday event, which sees participation from every varsity team, is run by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Each team adopts a family through the Salvation Army and is provided information including names, ages and gift ideas for the children in each family. After the teams purchased gifts for their assigned families, they all gathered in the Smith Center Auditorium to wrap the presents.
"Our student-athletes try to go off of what is provided, but may provide other items as well," said Director of Student-Athlete Development Angela Montie. "This year we provided for 52 children in 17 families. Every varsity team participated."
Men's tennis player and SAAC President Jasper Koenen led the charge for the event.
"One of my favorite annual traditions that the SAAC does is Team for Toys when many student athletes come together and wrap gifts for families that they sponsor during the holiday season," said Koenen. "All of the teams being together in one room and wrapping gifts while listening to holiday music and eating treats is such a great way to bring student athletes together. As student-athletes, it's so important that we take the time to give back in our communities especially during this time of the year."
