EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team improved to 8-1 by defeating Cincinnati, 5-2 on Saturday morning at the MSU indoor tennis facility. It was the end of a five-match homestand for the Spartans, who finished with a 4-1 record over that span.
"We are seeing the grittiness and the toughness that we have talked about and their ability and courage to finish points," said head coach Kim Bruno. "I really loved the end of our home stretch here and we were able to put together a little streak and I think we have to have the confidence to go on the road now and succeed."
Senior Athena Trouillot and freshman Samantha Memije won their seventh consecutive doubles match and were the deciding court in determining the doubles point. Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen improved to 5-2 as a pair with a 6-3 win on the second doubles court to give MSU its first doubles win of the day before Trouillot and Memije won in similar fashion, 6-3.
The Spartans have taken the doubles point in all eight of their victories this season.
MSU went right to work in the singles matches to secure the victory, starting with Trouillot who won in straight sets on court six, 6-0, 6-1. She has now won five straight matches and is 12-4 on the year. Nguyen won her fourth consecutive match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fourth singles, before Lexi Baylis picked up her 10th win of the year with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fifth singles.
"Today showed how much depth we have on this team," said Bruno. "After getting that doubles point and for them to come out and earn wins so quick, that just shows how we can win at any position and it is going to be hard to beat our four, five and six for sure."
Sophomore Emily Metcalf remained undefeated in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory on third singles and is now 8-0 on the season.
Junior Aslina Chua battled at second singles. After winning the first set, 6-4, Cincinnati's Kelly Poggensee-Wei took the second set, 6-3. The two went back and forth throughout the third set before Poggensee-Wei won the third-set tiebreaker, 10-7.
Michigan State will begin their seven-match road trip next weekend as they travel to Western Michigan on Friday, Feb. 24, with the match set to begin at 5 p.m. MSU then travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Saturday, Feb. 25, with the match set to begin at 11 a.m.
