TOLEDO, Ohio - The Michigan State men's golf team took second place at the Inverness Intercollegiate after Tuesday morning's final round in Toledo, Ohio, was cancelled due to thunderstorms. The Spartans finished the second round 9-under-par 559 (276-283), one shot back of tourney champ St. Mary's 10-under-par 558 (280-278).
"It's disappointing we weren't able to play today, but overall we can look at this tournament as a positive," said MSU head coach Casey Lubahn. "We'll move forward now and try to get a win next week."
Sophomore Kaleb Johnson tied for medalist honors with an 8-under-par 134. Johnson shot an opening-round 6-under-par 65, which tied for the second-lowest score in both school and Inverness Intercollegiate history. Johnson then shot a 2-under-par 69 in round two.
"Kaleb was brilliant yesterday and it's always special to get your first college win," said Lubhan. "He's one of the longest hitters in college golf and when he can drive straight, he puts himself in a great position. It's about consistency for him and his good is as good as anybody's."
Johnson tied Oklahoma State's Nick Heinen (68-66) for the individual title.
Senior Michael Sharp tied for ninth with a 3-under-par 139 (68-71) and freshman James Piot tied for 20th with an even-par 142 (70-72).
Senior Charlie Green was 3-over-par 145 (74-71) and sophomore Andrew Walker was 5-over-par 147 (73-74).
The Spartans will return to Ohio next week for the Bearcat Invitational, Sept. 25-26, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
