MSU fell just short on the road against the Hawkeyes.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Michigan State women's soccer team fell 1-0 Friday to Iowa at the UI Soccer Complex in the first game of a two-game weekend road trip.
Â
The Hawkeyes (7-6-2, 3-4-1 B1G) benefited from a redirected shot off an MSU defender in the 65th minute for the only goal of the game. It's the fifth straight Big Ten Conference game the Spartans (5-7-3, 0-6-2 B1G) have fallen short by just a single goal.
Â
How It Happened: Both teams played to counterattack early on, looking to see the game plan of the other side. Redshirt-junior Brittany Tanner made her first start since the season opener, and took the Spartans first shot in the 12th minute that was deflected and blocked on the way to the net. Sophomore Danielle Stephan was able to corral the rebound and get off a shot of her own, but another Hawkeye defender was able to block it from going on goal. Freshman Camryn Evans drove one towards the goal in the 19th minute, but goalkeeper Claire Graves was able to make the save.
Â
"We got off to a great start, and had some of our best offense of the year in terms of setting up chances, but we just didn't bury great opportunities," Saxton said. "We came to play and really went after them, which we thought was important playing at their place when they were coming off a big win. The chances just didn't go our way when we had them."
Â
The two sides hit the halftime break at 0-0, before Iowa finally broke through 20 minutes into the second half. The Spartan back line, which has been strong all season and done well to limit chances, gave up a tough one when a redirected shot caught redshirt-junior Reilley Ott without an opportunity to make a stop. Ott was in position to make the save off the initial shot, but had no chance to react after it hit off an MSU defender, giving UI the 1-0 lead.
Â
Junior Sadie Misiewicz, who has started every game this season on the wing, made her first start at center mid. The midfielder distributed the ball around and gave the Spartans chances in the offensive third. Misiewicz and Tanner were both bright spots heading into the second game of the road trip.
Â
"Sadie was brilliant and she made such a difference for us in the center mid, really sparking our attack," Saxton said. "Brittany (Tanner) had some very good moments for us tonight in an expanded role and that was great to see. The team played hard and did everything we asked of them, it just didn't go our way when it needed to." Â
Â
Up Next: MSU finishes the road trip with a 2 p.m. eastern time kickoff Sunday at Nebraska. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
