Spartans Defeated by Miami (Ohio) in Regular Season Finale

OXFORD, Ohio -- Playing in their final game of the regular season on Sunday, October 21, the Michigan State field hockey team lost to Miami (Ohio) by a final score of 4-0.
With a loss the Spartans record stands at 4-14 at the conclusion of the regular season. Miami improved to 12-6 overall with one game remaining on their regular season slate.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell set a new career-high in saves with 11 on 28 shots faced. Miami's Maddie Passarella made two saves, each coming in the second half.
Michigan State was out-shot by the Redhawks 28-5 overall and 15-2 in shots on goal. Miami held an 11-0 shot advantage in the first half and took 10 penalty corners to just two for the Spartans.
Miami got on the board early as Paula Portugal scored on penalty corner in the 8th minute. Portugal scored twice more for the Redhawks during Sunday's game with her second goal coming in the 32nd minute and the third coming in the 47th minute.
Michigan State had their best series of offensive opportunities in the 37th minute following a penalty corner by freshman Aisha Osinga. Senior Amanda Robinson had her ensuing shot blocked which led to shots by senior Madison O'Neill and senior Bailey Higgins being saved by Passarella.
Osinga had a second penalty corner in the 38th minute which led to a blocked shot for freshman Daphne Voorman.
Gabby Luxardo scored Miami's fourth goal of the game on a rebound in the 60th minute.

The 2018 Big Ten tournament is set to kick off on Friday, October 26 as No. 9-seeded Michigan State faces off against No. 8-seeded Indiana from Maryland's campus in College Park, Maryland. The winner of Friday's game will advance to face Maryland in the tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, October 28.

MSU was defeated by Indiana by a final score of 1-0 earlier this season in game played in Bloomington, Indiana. Indiana's Taylor Swope scored in the 65th minute to defeat the Spartans late in the game.
