Two early goals got the Huskers past MSU Wednesday afternoon.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Michigan State women's soccer fell 2-0 to Nebraska Wednesday afternoon at Hibner Stadium, bringing the Spartans' season to a close.
MSU (5-10-3, 0-9-2 B1G) fell behind early and couldn't recover as the Cornhuskers (9-6-4, 5-3-3) scored two goals in the first 12 minutes. Wednesday's game was the make-up date from the originally scheduled game on Oct. 14 that was postponed due to snow.
How It Happened: Nebraska jumped in front in the seventh minute when Savanah Uveges broke away from the Spartan defense and finished with a drive from just outside the box past a diving Spartan redshirt-junior goalkeeper Reilley Ott.
Five minutes later the Cornhuskers found the net again, making the score 2-0 on a 12th minute goal from Meg Brandt. Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Argeros replaced Ott after the second goal, making her first appearance of the season. Argeros was impressive in goal the rest of the way, making a save and limiting other chances for the Nebraska offense.
After making halftime adjustments for the unique Nebraska tactical system, MSU was able to pressure the Husker back line, but weren't able to push anything across the line. The Spartans ended the game with five shots.
"We encouraged them to go direct, and we put tons of pressure on their goal in the last half hour," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "Lydia (Franks) got in on the wing and we were cued up across the goal, but we couldn't find it."
Freshmen midfielder Abby Gardiner and defender Annabelle Honet made their Big Ten play debuts and stood out in the midfield for the Spartans.
"Olivia (Argeros) was spectacular back there for us after she came in," Saxton said. "I'm excited by the effort our young players demonstrated out there, and I think it bodes well for the future."
Wednesday's game brought the MSU career of three Spartan seniors to a close in forward Lexy Warner, defender Brenna Cockerill and defender Sabrina Marx.
