EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team concluded their 2018 fall season this past weekend at the 2018 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Seniors Colin Harvey, Ivan Rakic and Billy Shisler competed for the Spartans in addition to sophomore John Carlin.
In a close match, Shisler fell in the first round of singles to Nebraska's Chris Dean (7-5, 7-6(5)). Harvey dropped his first round match to Iowa's Jason Kerst (6-0, 6-0). Rakic also had tough luck against the Hawkeyes, losing to Piotr Smietana (6-3, 6-0). Carlin matched up with Michigan's Harrison Brown in round one, but was defeated (6-2, 6-2).
Harvey and Carlin had better luck on the consolation side with each winning one match. Carlin bested Northwestern's Trice Pickens in a tightly contested match (7-6(4), 10-7) and Harvey defeated Penn State's Noah Sutter.
Doubles pairing for the event were Shisler/Carlin and Rakic/Harvey. Both duos fell in the first round of action. Michigan State made a run in the double flight "B" consolation bracket, with a pairing of Harvey and Carlin. MSU defeated Sutter and Sentay of Penn State 8-2 prior to an 8-4 victory over Northwestern's Pickens and Fasano in the consolation final.
"I thought our guys competed their tails off this whole fall," said Michigan State assistant coach Harry Jadun. "Every practice and competition tested our guys and they answered the bell. Our program is about continuous improvement and we did a great job of establishing that this fall. As a coaching staff, we are excited for this group of guys as they accelerate into the offseason and prepare themselves for our spring season."
Michigan State's season will resume at home on Saturday, January 12 against Xavier University.
